Boom Supersonic Unveils New Engine Details for Overture at Paris Air Show
Boom Supersonic, the renowned company behind the development of the world’s fastest airliner, made exciting announcements at the Paris Air Show regarding its Overture supersonic jet. The company revealed new suppliers and shared engine details, captivating aviation enthusiasts and industry professionals alike. This strategic move showcased Boom Supersonic’s commitment to pushing boundaries and revolutionizing air travel.
During the event, Boom Supersonic showcased the system configuration of the Overture, highlighting its remarkable features. The aircraft boasts compatibility with 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), triple-redundant hydraulics, and landing gear that supports over 600 air routes worldwide. These features not only promote environmental sustainability but also enhance operational efficiency and safety.
The Overture supersonic jet, set to be in service by 2029, is an extraordinary Mach 1.75 airliner with a range of 4,250 nautical miles. Its exceptional performance has already attracted substantial attention, with nearly 130 orders placed by renowned airlines such as American Airlines (AA), Japan Airlines (JL), and United Airlines (UA). Furthermore, Boom Supersonic has partnered with Northrop Grumman to develop a specialized military variant of the Overture, showcasing the aircraft’s potential for diverse applications.
Boom Supersonic also announced its collaboration with three new Tier 1 suppliers to support the development of the Overture: Leonardo, Aernnova, and Aciturri. Leonardo, an esteemed Italian aerospace company, will take the lead in engineering major fuselage structural components and construct two significant fuselage sections, including the wingbox. Aernnova, a reputable Spanish company specializing in aerostructures, will design and develop the advanced wing structure featuring distinctive gull wings to optimize supersonic performance. Aciturri, another Spanish firm renowned for its expertise in composite materials, will design and manufacture the empennage for the Overture.
These new suppliers join Boom Supersonic’s existing network of global partners, including respected names such as Safran Landing Systems, Eaton, Collins Aerospace, Flight Safety International, FTT, GE Additive, and StandardAero. The collaboration with these industry leaders further reinforces Boom Supersonic’s commitment to assembling a world-class team dedicated to achieving its vision of accessible and sustainable supersonic travel.
Additionally, Boom Supersonic shared exciting details about its Symphony engine, specifically designed to power the Overture. This two-spool, medium-bypass turbofan engine features a 35,000 lb thrust capacity and operates without an afterburner. It is optimized for compatibility with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and maintains low noise levels. The Symphony engine incorporates innovative elements such as a single-stage 72-inch fan, an air-cooled multi-stage turbine, and additive manufacturing techniques that reduce weight and assembly costs. Importantly, the engine complies with FAA Part 33 and EASA CS 33 regulations, ensuring adherence to stringent safety standards.
