Breeze Airways Initiates Flag Carrier Status Application for Transatlantic Expansion

Breeze Airways, the US-based carrier known for its focus on underserved markets, has taken a significant step toward international expansion by applying for flag carrier status with the US Federal Aviation Authority (FAA). The move, as announced by founder and CEO David Neeleman, signals the airline’s intent to venture into international operations, with a keen eye on launching transatlantic services.

Obtaining flag carrier status is a crucial prerequisite for securing international traffic rights. While the airline has not disclosed a specific timeline for the application process, the intent to expand globally has been on Breeze Airways’ agenda for some time. The carrier, known for its operational focus on underserved markets in the US, is now set to explore opportunities in the leisure markets of the Caribbean and Central America, as well as initiate transatlantic flights.

The potential transatlantic services could target destinations such as Ireland, well within the range of Breeze Airways’ current fleet, which includes ten E190s, seven E195s, and eighteen A220-300s. Notably, the airline has an additional 62 A220-300s on order, underscoring its commitment to expanding its fleet for future growth.

While specific routes for international services have not been announced, the airline’s strategic use of its A220-300s hints at the potential for reaching European destinations. Breeze Airways currently operates from bases at various secondary airports in the US, including Charleston International, Hartford Bradley, New Orleans International, Norfolk International, VA, Providence, Provo, Tampa International, and White Plains.
