Brisbane Airport (BNE) has become the first airport in the world to earn the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) Security Management Systems (SeMS) certification, setting a new global benchmark in aviation security and risk management.

The SeMS program, developed by IATA to enhance aviation security practices, emphasizes proactive governance, continuous improvement, and alignment with international standards. Representing over 350 airlines and 80% of global air traffic, IATA created this structured framework to help airports effectively manage evolving security threats.

In June, Brisbane Airport underwent a comprehensive assessment that included an on-site visit and full audit. The review evaluated six key components: Corporate Governance, Resource Management, Threat and Risk Management, Quality Assurance, Emergency Management, and Security Documentation.

Brisbane Airport achieved the highest level of certification, receiving praise for strong executive leadership, cross-functional collaboration, and a culture of innovation and continuous improvement. Security protocols are embedded into strategic planning and daily operations, with strong coordination across all departments.

“At Brisbane Airport, safety and security go hand in hand,” said CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff. “This certification demonstrates our commitment to global best practices and a safe, trusted experience for the 24 million passengers we serve annually.”

Stephen Leah, Head of Security & Emergency Management, accepted the certification at IATA’s Geneva headquarters.

IATA Asia-Pacific VP Sheldon Hee added, “SeMS is about moving from compliance to proactive security. We commend Brisbane Airport for leading this global shift.”

Brisbane Airport, Australia’s most connected domestic hub, is undergoing a $5 billion transformation ahead of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
