British Airways Celebrates 25 Years at London City Airport
On November 5, 2024, British Airways proudly celebrated 25 years of operations at London City Airport (LCY). The airline, utilizing its fleet of 20 Embraer ERJ-190s through its regional subsidiary BA Cityflyer, has established a strong presence at this central London hub.
The inaugural flight from Sheffield-City Airport to London-City commenced on November 5, 1999, operated by British Regional Airlines, which has since been dissolved. Over the years, more than 27 million passengers have traveled under the British Airways banner, whether on the airline’s own aircraft or those of its partner airlines.
BA Cityflyer took over operations from BA Connect in 2007 and has since expanded its network to over 50 destinations across Europe. Key routes include long-standing connections to Frankfurt and Geneva, while Edinburgh remains the most popular destination, followed closely by Glasgow, Amsterdam, and Frankfurt.
Situated just eight miles from Central London and minutes from Canary Wharf, London-City Airport welcomed 3.4 million passengers in 2023. The airport anticipates a surge in passenger numbers in 2024, aiming to approach the five million mark seen in 2019. Currently, BA Cityflyer is the largest carrier at London-City, offering direct flights to 26 short-haul destinations, including the Greek island of Mykonos, which is the furthest at 1,570 miles (2,512 km) away.
“London City is easily accessible, with a quick journey through the airport, from check-in to gate in just 20 minutes,” stated Tom Stoddart, CEO of BA Cityflyer. He emphasized that reaching this milestone reflects the team’s dedication to enhancing operations over the years.
Alison FitzGerald, CEO of London City Airport, expressed pride in the partnership with British Airways, calling it a significant achievement for both the airline and the airport. To mark the occasion, BA Cityflyer has launched an anniversary sale, offering up to 25% off fares to various city break destinations. Customers can book until November 11, 2024, for travel before March 31, 2025, taking advantage of this special offer.
