Britten-Norman to Boost Islander Aircraft Production
Britten-Norman, the UK-based plane manufacturer, is set to increase production of its Islander utility aircraft following a successful second funding round. On October 14, 2024, the company announced that it secured additional investment from Beechlands Enterprise, based in Northern Ireland, allowing for a significant scale-up in manufacturing operations.
With this new funding, Britten-Norman aims to ramp up production to eight aircraft per year, focusing primarily on the unleaded piston variant of the Islander. Approximately 20% of the aircraft produced will be turboprop models. “This welcome investment from Beechlands will enable Britten-Norman to complete its aircraft manufacturing repatriation programme, with the first aircraft destined for the Falkland Islands,” said William Hynett, CEO of Britten-Norman. He emphasized the company’s commitment to enhancing its international aftermarket operations, ensuring its long-term status as the preferred manufacturer for reliable, low-cost, short-field, sub-regional air transportation.
The new investment will enable Britten-Norman to acquire advanced manufacturing tools and machinery, as well as improve its component production capabilities. “We’re delighted to invest in Britten-Norman. Great people, great product, and now with more capital, great prospects,” stated Alison Rankin Frost, Director of Beechlands.
Earlier in 2024, Britten-Norman faced uncertainty when it filed a notice to appoint administrators, but a timely investment from a group led by 4D Capital Partners in March secured the company’s future.
The Islander aircraft is renowned for its versatility and reliability, featuring a distinctive high-wing design that offers excellent visibility for both crew and passengers. It serves a variety of missions, including passenger transport, cargo hauling, surveillance, and search-and-rescue operations. The aircraft has also been adapted into a multirole military transport version known as the Defender, further showcasing its adaptability in various operational contexts. With this new investment and production expansion, Britten-Norman aims to solidify its position in the aviation market.
