Brussels Airlines has unveiled its latest special livery as part of its renowned Belgian Icons series, a collection of aircraft designs that celebrate the nation’s cultural heritage. The newest design pays homage to the Atomium, the iconic atom-shaped monument that has been a symbol of Brussels since the 1958 World’s Fair. The distinctive design, which captures the elegance and futuristic spirit of the landmark, was chosen through an extensive public competition launched in August 2024. The contest attracted around 900 submissions from creative minds across Belgium and beyond, with a meticulous selection process narrowing the entries down to five finalists. A popular ballot, which garnered more than 50,000 votes, further assisted in the decision-making process, culminating in the announcement of the winning design in November 2024.

The winning artwork, crafted by acclaimed Belgian architect Thomas Faes, impressed the judging panel composed of influential figures from the worlds of business, culture, and the arts, including Brussels Airlines CEO Dorothea von Boxberg. The panel praised the design for its modern reinterpretation of the Atomium, highlighting how it embodies the spirit of innovation and the rich history of the Belgian capital. After careful deliberation and a rigorous selection process, the winning design was brought to life with an impressive commitment to detail, involving approximately 400 liters of specialized paint and 2,400 hours of dedicated work by expert technicians. The result is a stunning and dynamic livery that transforms the exterior of the aircraft into a moving tribute to one of Brussels’ most celebrated landmarks.

The aircraft chosen to showcase this new livery is an Airbus A320, registered as OO-SNM. The unveiling event was held at the Brussels Airlines Maintenance & Engineering hangar, where the aircraft was presented in all its glory to an enthusiastic audience of industry insiders, media representatives, and aviation enthusiasts. The presentation was a true celebration of Belgian art and innovation, and in keeping with the theme of the Belgian Icons series, the cabin of the aircraft was also adorned with carefully curated decorations that reference the Atomium and its construction process. These thoughtful touches extend the theme beyond the exterior, providing passengers with an immersive experience that reflects the creative heritage of Brussels.

The debut of the new Atomium livery marks another milestone for Brussels Airlines as it continues to innovate and celebrate its national identity through its aircraft designs. The airline has strategically used the Belgian Icons series as a platform to connect with passengers and pay tribute to the cultural and historical symbols of Belgium. The first revenue flight featuring the new livery is scheduled to operate between Brussels-Zaventem (BRU) and Prague (PRG) on March 27, 2025. This launch is expected to generate significant interest among travelers and aviation fans alike, who appreciate both the aesthetic appeal and the cultural significance of the design. By integrating art, history, and modern technology, Brussels Airlines is not only enhancing its brand image but also reinforcing its commitment to showcasing the very best of Belgian creativity on the global stage.
