Brussels Airport Celebrates Routes World Award, Passenger Growth
Brussels Airport (BRU) is on track to reach a record of 24 million passengers in 2024, offering flights to 185 destinations with 65 airlines, marking a robust recovery and continued growth in the post-pandemic era. This year, BRU has added eight new airlines, including Norwegian, Wizz Air, Singapore Airlines, flynas, and Juneyao Air, alongside new routes like Air Canada’s service to Toronto and the return of Singapore Airlines and Brussels Airlines’ routes to Shanghai and Nairobi, respectively.
The airport has strengthened its Middle Eastern and Asian connectivity, with Royal Jordanian resuming Amman service in October 2023 and a new Jeddah route launching in December. TUI fly Belgium will add Curaçao in November 2024, and Thai Airways is set to restart Bangkok flights in December.
In Europe, BRU expanded its network with flights to Bergen and Tromsø (Norway), Krakow (Poland), Seville (Spain), Bari (Italy), and Monastir (Tunisia). Speaking at Routes World 2024 in Bahrain, BRU’s Director of Aviation Development Léon Verhallen highlighted the airport’s focus on filling European connectivity gaps and enhancing long-haul routes to North and South America, Asia, and Africa.
With new routes to U.S. cities like Boston and Philadelphia, São Paulo in Brazil, and Riyadh in Saudi Arabia under consideration, BRU aims to build a comprehensive network linking key continents. Reflecting on winning the Routes World award in the Over 20 Million Passenger category, Verhallen expressed pride in the airport’s consistent, innovative approach to route development and market support.
