Canada Certifies Gulfstream G500 and G600 Jets

Transport Canada has issued type certificate A-287 for the Gulfstream G500 and Gulfstream G600, formally approving the two ultra-long-range business jets for operation in Canada. The certification was granted on February 15, concluding a process that began approximately six years ago.

The move comes amid heightened political tensions between Ottawa and Washington. Two weeks prior to the certification, United States President Donald Trump threatened to decertify aircraft manufactured in Canada, specifically targeting Bombardier Business Aircraft and its Global Express series, unless newer Gulfstream models also secured Canadian certification. While no formal decertification action followed, the remarks added pressure to an already sensitive cross-border aerospace relationship.

The approval of the G500 and G600 strengthens Gulfstream Aerospace’s competitive position in the Canadian market, where long-range business jets are widely used for corporate, private, and government operations. Both aircraft feature advanced avionics, fly-by-wire controls, and extended range capabilities, positioning them in direct competition with Bombardier’s flagship Global family.

Transport Canada’s decision underscores the regulator’s independent certification framework, which typically works in close coordination with the US Federal Aviation Administration and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency under established bilateral agreements.

Meanwhile, certification efforts are continuing for two additional Gulfstream models, the Gulfstream G700 and Gulfstream G800. According to the manufacturer, the Canadian validation process for those aircraft began in 2024 and remains ongoing. Completion is contingent upon the conclusion of fuel-icing tests and related technical assessments.

Industry Minister Mélanie Joly described the certification process for the G700 and G800 as “well underway,” indicating that regulatory coordination remains active despite political rhetoric.

The latest approvals highlight the importance of harmonized aviation certification between Canada and the United States, particularly in the high-value business aviation sector. With type certification now secured for the G500 and G600, Gulfstream is positioned to expand deliveries and operational activity in Canada, while attention shifts to finalizing validation for its next-generation G700 and G800 platforms.
