Canada Moves to Seize Russian An-124 Aircraft Grounded Since 2022

Canada has initiated legal proceedings to seize a Russian Antonov An-124 “Ruslan” cargo aircraft that has been grounded at Toronto Pearson International Airport since February 2022. The move follows Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and Canada’s subsequent ban on Russian aircraft in its airspace.

The aircraft belongs to Russian cargo carrier Volga-Dnepr Airlines and has remained at the airport for over two years. On May 6, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna confirmed the court action, expressing hope the aircraft would eventually be transferred to Ukraine.

A spokesperson for Global Affairs Canada told InSauga that the Attorney General of Canada began the legal process by requesting a Notice of Application from the Ontario Superior Court on March 18, 2025.

The Antonov An-124 is one of the largest cargo planes in the world, measuring about 69 meters in length and 21 meters in height. Originally developed and built in Ukraine, it remains a symbol of Ukrainian aviation engineering. The Antonov An-225 Mriya, a larger one-off version, was destroyed by Russian forces at Hostomel Airport early in the war.

Stefanishyna stated, “I am convinced that all these actions are leading to one outcome: the ‘Ruslan’ will soon have a new home — in Ukraine, where it will serve our country’s needs.” She praised Canada’s support, calling the legal steps a clear example of justice in action.

The case could set a precedent for future asset seizures tied to international sanctions and wartime reparations involving Russia.
