Carnival Celebrates 15 Years of Seattle Alaska Cruises

Carnival Cruise Line marked a milestone on May 1 as it kicked off its 2025 Alaska season with an anniversary celebration aboard Carnival Luminosa in Seattle. Since debuting cruises from the Port of Seattle in 2010 with Carnival Spirit, the line has welcomed more than 100,000 guests each summer on week-long voyages to Alaska’s Inside Passage and Glacier Bay.
The birthday bash aboard Luminosa brought together port officials, civic leaders and media for a festive evening of speeches, live music and regional cuisine. Carnival President Christine Duffy highlighted the impact of Seattle operations: “Cruising is the best way to see Alaska, and Carnival offers the most fun way to experience that beautiful destination,” she said. To underscore Carnival’s commitment to the Pacific Northwest, Duffy presented a $20,000 donation to FareStart, a Seattle nonprofit that provides free job training and meals to individuals facing homelessness and poverty.
Over the last decade and a half, Carnival has expanded its Seattle homeport offerings beyond Alaska. In 2014, the line introduced round-trip Hawaii sailings from Seattle, opening up tropical itineraries to the Pacific Islands. Carnival has also supported the Port of Seattle’s shore-power capabilities, reducing emissions by allowing ships to plug into electricity rather than run diesel engines while docked.
Carnival Luminosa arrives in Seattle fresh from a 28-day trans-Pacific voyage that closed out her Australia season. The ship and Carnival Spirit will now alternate weekly departures for seven-day Alaska cruises, visiting ports such as Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway and Victoria, British Columbia. Both ships feature Carnival’s signature “Fun Ship” offerings, including water slides, live entertainment, specialty dining venues and family-friendly activities.
“Seattle has been instrumental in helping us grow our Alaska cruise offerings,” Duffy added. “We’re proud to support local organizations like FareStart that make such a positive impact in the community.” In turn, FareStart CEO Jess Sutherlin praised Carnival’s long-term partnership: “This generous gift will expand our culinary training programs and allow us to serve more meals to Seattle residents in need.”
The Port of Seattle commemorated Carnival’s anniversary with a plaque ceremony at the dock, recognizing the cruise line’s economic contributions. According to port data, Carnival Spirit and Carnival Luminosa together carry an estimated 150,000 passengers and crew on Alaska and Hawaii itineraries in 2025, generating millions in local tourism revenue each year.
Looking ahead, Carnival plans to return to Seattle for its 16th consecutive Alaska season in 2026, with enhancements to both cruise schedules and onboard experiences. A series of updates will roll out across the fleet, including new menu items crafted by Seattle chefs and expanded community service initiatives at each homeport.
As the sun set over Elliott Bay, guests disembarked the anniversary sailing inspired to explore Alaska’s soaring fjords and wildlife-rich waterways. For Carnival and Seattle alike, the partnership forged over 15 years promises continued growth, innovation and fun on the high seas.
