Cathay Pacific Returns to Kai Tak, Now a Sports Park

Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific is reconnecting with its roots by partnering with the new state-of-the-art Kai Tak Sports Park (KTSP) at the historic site of the former Kai Tak International Airport. The airline, renowned for its premium travel experience, has been named the exclusive Founding Travel Partner of KTSP, marking a symbolic homecoming for Cathay as it celebrates its heritage and champions Hong Kong’s cultural and sporting legacy.
The announcement was made on February 24, 2025, during a ceremony held at the Health and Wellness Centre at KTSP. Cathay Pacific’s Chief Customer and Commercial Officer, Lavinia Lau, led the event alongside KTSP’s Chief Executive Officer, John Sharkey. The new venue is poised to become Hong Kong’s largest integrated sports and entertainment landmark, hosting a diverse range of events from sports competitions and cultural shows to major entertainment gigs.
Historically, Kai Tak Airport was not only Hong Kong’s international gateway but also the long-time home of Cathay Pacific, where the carrier’s operations, maintenance, and support functions were centralized until the airport’s closure in 1998. The final flight from Kai Tak, a Cathay Pacific Airbus A340-300, marked the end of an era as it ferried passengers to the new Chep Lap Kok airport. Today, Cathay’s return to Kai Tak Park as the exclusive Founding Travel Partner is a tribute to the airline’s storied past and its ongoing commitment to the city.
A key feature of the partnership is the launch of the Cathay-branded West Bridge, an aviation-themed immersive experience that will connect the Sung Wong Toi MTR station with Kai Tak Stadium. This unique attraction is designed to engage the Hong Kong community and rekindle collective memories of the airline’s journey from its inception at Kai Tak. Additionally, visitors will encounter ‘World Flyer’ – an attraction featuring a scaled-down representation of Kai Tak Airport’s major facilities, offering a welcoming and educational space for community interaction.
Beyond these immersive experiences, Cathay Pacific will actively sponsor a range of projects, events, and attractions at KTSP in the coming years. A highlight is the upcoming annual Hong Kong Rugby Sevens tournament, which will be rebranded as the Cathay Pacific / HSBC Hong Kong Sevens and hosted at KTSP from March 28 to 30, 2025. This major sporting event is expected to draw global attention and further boost tourism in Hong Kong.
“Our return to Kai Tak as the exclusive Founding Travel Partner of KTSP is a testament to Cathay’s evolution from an airline to a leading premium travel lifestyle brand,” said Lavinia Lau. “It symbolizes our unwavering commitment to the continued growth and development of Hong Kong as a world-class city.” Lau emphasized that the partnership is not just about marking a historic comeback; it is about creating an array of memorable, immersive experiences that highlight Hong Kong’s rich heritage while attracting visitors from across the globe.
John Sharkey of KTSP added, “We are thrilled to welcome Cathay back to their original home. Kai Tak was once where Hong Kong met the world, and this partnership will help bring that symbolism to life once again as we embark on delivering world-class events for the people of Hong Kong.”
Cathay Pacific’s renewed focus on Kai Tak Park underscores its dedication to celebrating its past, engaging the local community, and elevating Hong Kong’s international profile through dynamic cultural and sporting events.
