Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) marked a significant milestone on September 17, 2024, with the opening of 10 new gates, primarily designated for Delta Air Lines. This expansion is part of a larger 200,000-square-foot project aimed at enhancing the airport’s capacity and passenger experience.

The newly added gates are situated in Concourse A, one of the five concourses at CLT, bringing the total number of gates at the airport to 124. Delta will occupy seven of these new gates, while low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines will utilize two. The remaining gate will be available for common use, providing flexibility for various airlines operating at the airport.

In addition to the new gates, Delta Air Lines is set to debut a new 15,000-square-foot premium lounge in Concourse A by the end of 2024, further enhancing its services at CLT.

The $241 million expansion project was financed through a combination of bonds, passenger facility charges, and a grant from the North Carolina Airport Improvement Program. Construction began in May 2022, with local firms JE Dunn Construction and McFarland Construction managing the project.

Haley Gentry, CEO of CLT, expressed enthusiasm about the expansion, stating, “This development not only signifies growth but also demonstrates our commitment to enhancing the overall travel experience. The 10 new gates reflect a significant investment in our infrastructure.”

The opening of the new gates follows the recent addition of two pedestrian bridges that connect CLT’s hourly parking and rental car facility to the terminal. These improvements are part of a larger $600 million terminal lobby expansion expected to be completed next year, aimed at improving accessibility and convenience for travelers.

In 2024, CLT has already experienced impressive growth, handling over 232 million passengers in the first half of the year, marking a 12.1% increase compared to the previous year. The airport is currently connected to 186 destinations, including 39 international points, solidifying its status as one of American Airlines’ key hubs.

With these new developments, Charlotte Douglas International Airport continues to enhance its infrastructure and services, ensuring it meets the growing demands of air travel. As the airport expands its capacity, it remains committed to providing a seamless and enjoyable travel experience for passengers. The addition of the new gates and lounges signifies a proactive approach to accommodating future passenger growth and maintaining its position as a vital hub in the region.
