China Eastern Airlines is set to enhance its European presence with the launch of two new nonstop routes to Italy starting September. The airline will inaugurate services from Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) to Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE), and from Xi’an Xianyang International Airport (XIY) to Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP). Flights on both routes will operate three times a week utilizing Airbus A330 aircraft.

This expansion marks China Eastern’s debut in Venice and will double its Italian routes to four, complementing its existing services to Rome Fiumicino Airport. The airline previously served Milan during the initial months of the pandemic and is now returning with a more robust presence in Italy.

The move comes amidst a broader trend of Chinese carriers bolstering their European networks, contrasting with reduced service from European airlines to mainland China due to logistical challenges stemming from the Russia overflight situation. Chinese airlines have notably added or announced 13 new routes to Europe this year, underscoring their strategic focus on expanding international connectivity.

China Eastern’s initiative aligns with efforts to recover and surpass pre-pandemic passenger volumes, reflecting a 254.4% year-on-year increase in international travel compared to 2019 levels. The airline aims to strengthen its position in the competitive transcontinental market, leveraging its robust fleet and strategic alliances within the SkyTeam network.

This strategic expansion underscores China Eastern’s commitment to enhancing global connectivity and meeting growing passenger demand between China and Europe.
