China Southern Airlines is set to resume its direct flights to Adelaide Airport (ADL) from December 12, 2024, strengthening the connection between South Australia and one of its largest international tourism markets, Guangzhou. This expansion marks the return of the Shanghai-based carrier to Adelaide after a six-year hiatus caused by the global pandemic.

Starting June 2025, China Southern will operate three direct flights weekly from Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN) to Adelaide. These flights, scheduled for Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, will be serviced by the airline’s fleet of Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners. Each aircraft can accommodate 266 passengers in a two-class configuration, with 18 seats in business class and 248 in economy class.

The revival of this route is expected to significantly boost South Australia’s tourism and economy. According to Adelaide Airport, the introduction of three non-stop flights each week is projected to generate over $69 million annually and create more than 255 full-time equivalent tourism-related jobs. This initiative aligns with the state’s broader strategy to enhance connectivity and support local businesses.

“Tourism is a key industry on the Gold Coast and the new agreement with Queensland Airports will support the growth of inbound tourism and provide a big boost to local operators,” said Brenton Cox, Managing Director of Adelaide Airport. “This service will stimulate travel, generate trade, connect communities, and is an essential link in our network vision that will grow our state’s economy.”

In addition to serving direct traffic between Guangzhou and Adelaide, these flights will also link South Australia to China Southern’s extensive international network, including destinations in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and North America. This connectivity will facilitate easier access to global markets for South Australian exporters, particularly those in the fresh seafood and produce sectors.

Peter Malinauskas, South Australian Premier, highlighted the broader economic benefits: “This is another massive win for our state’s tourism and trade sectors, which will see millions of dollars injected into our state year on year. Building airline capacity has been a priority for the government from the start, as we work to bring back international visitors in South Australia who are not just here for a holiday, but those ready to invest in businesses, education, and exports.”

Zhixing Sun, Regional General Manager for China Southern Airlines Australia and New Zealand, emphasized the strategic importance of the route: “In 2009, China Southern Airlines initiated its internationalization strategy. In 2016, we launched the Guangzhou to Adelaide route, utilizing Guangzhou as a passenger hub to provide travel services between China and major cities around the world. We are looking forward to strengthening cooperation with various sectors in South Australia, continuing to expand the ‘Canton Route’, and bringing more travelers from China and around the world to South Australia.”

The new flight schedule will see China Southern flight CZ663 depart Guangzhou at 22:15, arriving in Adelaide at 09:55 the following day. The return flight, CZ664, will leave Adelaide at 11:30 and reach Guangzhou at 18:05. Additionally, Jetstar is expanding its Trans-Tasman network with new routes from Gold Coast to Dunedin and Hamilton, further enhancing regional connectivity.

China Southern’s return to Adelaide is part of a broader effort to revitalize the airline’s international presence and support South Australia’s economic growth. By providing more flight options and increasing connectivity, China Southern aims to cater to both leisure and business travelers, fostering stronger ties between Australia and China.

As the launch date approaches, passengers can expect enhanced travel options and competitive fares, making it easier than ever to explore South Australia and connect with global destinations.
