Chongqing Airport Expands with New Terminal and Runway
Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport (CKG) is set for major expansion with the construction of Terminal 3B and a fourth runway, both slated to be operational in early 2025. These upgrades will significantly boost the airport’s capacity, positioning it to handle 80 million passengers annually. Currently, CKG is expected to serve 50 million passengers by the end of this year, according to general manager Hou Wei.
The new terminal and runway will enhance operational efficiency, allowing the airport to accommodate 1.2 million tonnes of cargo and 580,000 aircraft movements annually. In addition to the infrastructure developments, CKG has secured new international routes, including direct flights to Seattle, Milan, Moscow, Jakarta, and Hanoi. Service to key destinations such as Singapore, Seoul, Bangkok, and Kuala Lumpur has also increased.
Chongqing is strategically positioning itself as a major aviation hub, targeting unserved markets in South America and Africa for future expansion. The airport is also actively seeking to attract more international airlines, particularly from Europe and Southeast Asia, to enhance its global connectivity and economic growth.
Further strengthening Chongqing’s aviation capabilities is the planned Bishan Airport, the city’s second international airport, which has received site selection approval. Positioned as a regional air cargo hub, Bishan Airport will complement CKG and support the region’s future growth as a major aviation center.
