Couple Sues American Airlines After Lifetime Flight Ban

A legal dispute involving American Airlines and a Texas airport authority is drawing attention after a couple alleged they were wrongfully denied boarding and subjected to excessive force during a confrontation over carry-on luggage.
Peter Williams and Dr. Mary Jane Williams filed separate civil lawsuits in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas on April 8, 2026, stemming from an incident that occurred on April 14, 2024, at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.
According to the complaints, the couple was traveling from Evansville, Indiana, to Phoenix with a connection in Dallas. The dispute began when an airline employee allegedly refused to allow Dr. Williams to board a connecting flight, citing that one of her carry-on bags exceeded size limits. The couple claims that the issue could have been resolved through standard customer service procedures but instead escalated when airline staff called airport police.
The lawsuits allege that American Airlines employees made misleading statements to law enforcement, prompting officers to intervene. The situation reportedly intensified on the jetway, where Dr. Williams was escorted away from the aircraft.
Peter Williams claims that when he attempted to return toward the plane, officers used excessive force, throwing him to the ground, restraining him with a knee to his back, and deploying a taser. The complaint states that he sustained multiple injuries, including to his head, chest, and abdomen. He was subsequently arrested and charged with criminal offenses in Tarrant County, though the couple says those charges were later dismissed.
In their filing against the airport and its public safety department, the couple accuses responding officers of false arrest, unlawful detention, and assault. The complaint further alleges that the use of a taser was unnecessary and disproportionate under the circumstances.
Separately, the lawsuit against American Airlines claims the carrier conducted what it described as an internal investigation but ultimately imposed a lifetime ban on the couple from future travel. The plaintiffs argue that the ban was retaliatory and reflects negligence, defamation, and improper staff training.
The couple is seeking a jury trial and damages covering medical expenses, lost wages, reputational harm, and other costs. The case underscores ongoing tensions around passenger rights, airline policies, and law enforcement procedures in airport environments.
American Airlines and airport officials have not publicly responded to the allegations.
