Cruise Line Private Islands Evolve with New Additions and Upgrades

The landscape of cruise line private islands is undergoing significant changes, highlighted by the recent announcement from the Bahamian government that the tax-free status for goods and services on these islands will end, introducing a 10 percent VAT. Amidst this backdrop, Carnival Cruise Line is gearing up to launch Celebration Key, set to become the newest private island destination for cruisers in 2025.

Since Norwegian Cruise Line pioneered the concept nearly 50 years ago with Great Stirrup Cay, private island ports have become a staple of Bahamas and Caribbean cruise itineraries. Today, several cruise lines boast their private island retreats, offering guests exclusive beach-party experiences and water sports activities. These islands, while exclusive to the lines that own them, sometimes welcome guests from sister lines.

Celebration Key: Slated to open in July 2025, Celebration Key by Carnival Cruise Line will feature distinct zones including Welcome, Adult-Friendly, Family-Friendly, Private Club, and Retail Portals. This Grand Bahama Island destination will host “the largest freshwater lagoons in the Caribbean” and offers direct pier access for up to two Carnival ships simultaneously.

Lookout Cay: Disney Cruise Line’s Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point is set to welcome guests in June, offering a family-friendly escape infused with the magic and culture of the Bahamas. Disney promises a range of complimentary amenities designed to ensure a memorable beach day for all ages.

Hideaway Beach: Royal Caribbean International recently introduced Hideaway Beach on CocoCay, an adults-only area complementing the A Perfect Day at CocoCay experience. This exclusive retreat features private cabanas, infinity pools, and a variety of food and drink options, with access starting at $39 per person.

Ocean Cay: MSC Cruises is enhancing Ocean Cay Marine Reserve with additional amenities and environmental infrastructure aimed at boosting marine conservation efforts and enriching guest experiences. Upgrades include new excursion and watersports centers, a marine conservation facility, and expanded dining options.

Half Moon Cay: Holland America Line is progressing with plans to build a pier at Half Moon Cay, renowned for its pristine beaches and array of activities, including snorkeling, kayaking, and horseback riding. The pier will facilitate easier access to the island for Holland America and Carnival cruise guests.

Great Stirrup Cay: Norwegian Cruise Line is reportedly planning to construct a dock at Great Stirrup Cay, allowing for direct ship access. This development is anticipated to enhance the guest experience at cruising’s original private island.

These developments reflect the cruise industry’s ongoing commitment to providing guests with unique and immersive island experiences. As cruise lines continue to innovate and invest in their private destinations, travelers can look forward to even more diverse and enriching options for their Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries.
