Cruise Lines Expand with New Ships and River Routes

May 2025 has brought a wave of exciting developments across the cruise industry, signaling a dynamic start to the summer travel season. From river cruise expansions and luxury ship unveilings to new private destinations and loyalty rewards, cruise lines are making significant moves to capture the attention of travelers worldwide. One of the most celebrated moments of the month was Travel Advisor Appreciation Month, during which major cruise brands rewarded travel agents with complimentary cruises, exclusive booking bonuses, and other perks to thank them for their continued support and commitment.
National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions revealed plans to enter the European river cruise market in 2026, in partnership with Transcend Cruises. Their first itineraries, like “Castles, Culture and Culinary Delights” and “Medieval History and Scenic Waterways,” will offer immersive travel through iconic European cities such as Mainz, Strasbourg, and Colmar. Trafalgar also joined the river cruise scene, announcing two new European itineraries for spring 2026, with bookings now open. Meanwhile, the Cruise Lines International Association reported a significant rise in cruise travel, with 34.6 million passengers sailing in 2024—a 9 percent increase from the year before.
Royal Caribbean made headlines this month by unveiling new entertainment and dining experiences aboard Star of the Seas, including five signature shows and the start of sea trials ahead of its August launch. The company also revealed plans for new private destinations across the Bahamas, Mexico, and the South Pacific, including the debut of Perfect Day Mexico in 2027. Celebrity Cruises hosted its 2025 President’s Cruise, a luxury sailing from Southampton to the Norwegian fjords. During the voyage, company president Laura Hodges Bethge shared updates on upcoming developments for the brand.
Regent Seven Seas Cruises offered the first look at its new ship, Seven Seas Prestige, including stunning renderings and a digital walkthrough of onboard spaces. Four Seasons Yachts secured financing to build its second vessel, to be constructed by Fincantieri and expected to launch after Four Seasons I debuts in January 2026. Margaritaville at Sea announced the acquisition of Costa Fortuna, a 3,450-guest ship that will become the largest in its growing fleet after renovations.
Carnival Cruise Line advanced its digital innovation with a new mobile-based shore excursion system being piloted in select Caribbean ports. This technology eliminates paper tickets and enhances guest experiences. In Egypt, Viking celebrated the float-out of Viking Thoth, its newest Nile River ship, which will join seven others in the region and begin service this October on the 12-day “Pharaohs & Pyramids” itinerary.
