Cruise Lines Reroute From Vanuatu Following Devastating Earthquake
Following a severe 7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck Vanuatu earlier this week, major cruise lines are adjusting their itineraries to avoid the South Pacific island, which suffered significant devastation. The natural disaster, which occurred on December 17, resulted in the deaths of at least 14 people and injuries to 200 others, according to Reuters.
Vanuatu, home to around 330,000 residents, is a favored stop on many South Pacific cruise routes, with Port Vila, the nation’s capital, being the primary destination. The earthquake has prompted a massive emergency response effort, with teams diligently searching for survivors and victims amidst the extensive rubble.
In response to the catastrophe, prominent cruise operators including Royal Caribbean International, Carnival Cruise Line, P&O Australia, and Cunard have decided to redirect their vessels originally scheduled to visit Port Vila. Travel Weekly reports that these cruise lines are now opting to either add an extra day at sea or make a stop at Mystery Island instead of the affected area.
This decision reflects the cruise industry’s commitment to passenger safety and the well-being of the destinations they visit. By rerouting their ships, these cruise lines also allow for more focused local recovery efforts in Vanuatu without the added pressure of accommodating tourists. As Vanuatu begins to rebuild and recover, the global travel community continues to watch and provide support where possible.
