Cruise vacations are taking a splashy turn with the latest trend in onboard entertainment – expansive and imaginative waterparks. Modern cruise ships are increasingly featuring multigenerational water attractions, and each new vessel seems to outdo the last with even larger and more thrilling waterparks.

These floating aquatic playgrounds cater to every family member, boasting a variety of water slides that stretch hundreds of feet and span several decks. Creativity abounds in their design, limited only by the ship designers’ imaginations. Some slides even integrate virtual reality, blending cutting-edge technology with adrenaline-pumping fun.

The waterparks offer a range of intensities to suit all ages and preferences, from high-speed racing tubes to more gentle attractions for younger cruisers. Their bright and festive color schemes in shades of pink, green, blue, orange, yellow, and purple add to the vibrant atmosphere, and the imaginative names of the slides spark excitement even before the ride begins.

Key highlights of the latest and greatest shipboard waterparks include:

  • Royal Caribbean Category 6: On the world’s largest cruise ship, Icon of the Seas, is Category 6, the largest waterpark at sea. This includes industry-first attractions like the Pressure Drop, Frightening Bolt, Storm Surge, Hurricane Hunter, and Storm Chasers.
  • Carnival WaterWorks: Aboard Carnival Jubilee, part of The Ultimate Playground complex, features Blue Lightening, Orange Thunder, the Twister, twin racing slides, the DrainPipe, and the PowerDrencher.
  • MSC Aurora Borealis Aquapark: Found on MSC World Europa, this park stands out with its use of virtual reality on four towering waterslides, plus a dedicated splash pool for toddlers.
  • Norwegian Kids’ Aqua Park: Featured on Norwegian Prima and Viva, this park caters to younger guests and includes The Wave, the first tidal-wave waterslide. The upcoming Norwegian Aqua will introduce the Aqua Slidecoaster, the world’s first hybrid roller coaster and waterslide.
  • Disney Toy Story Splash Zone: On Disney Wish, the zone is designed for young cruisers with pop jets, geysers, and water sprays, along with the AquaMouse water coaster and Slide-a-Saurus Rex for teens and adults.

These waterparks on cruise ships not only offer a fun way to beat the heat but also represent a significant evolution in onboard entertainment. They are redefining the cruise experience, offering an exhilarating blend of adventure and relaxation for all ages. As cruise lines continue to innovate, these waterparks are set to become even more spectacular, adding an extra splash of excitement to the high seas.
