Cyprus Ranked World’s Cleanest for Swimming Waters in 2025

Cyprus has been named the country with the cleanest swimming waters in the world, according to the latest European Environment Agency (EEA) report. The annual study, which evaluates coastal and inland bathing sites across Europe, found that 99.2% of Cyprus’s 123 tested waters received an “excellent” rating—the highest score possible.
This marks an improvement from last year, when 97.6% of the island’s waters achieved top marks. Popular beach resorts and more secluded bays were all part of the comprehensive testing.
Bulgaria secured second place, with 97.9% of its 94 tested sites rated excellent, while Greece came in third, with 97% of 1,729 sites meeting the same standard.
Cyprus, a member of the European Union, is known for its turquoise beaches, Mediterranean cuisine, and ancient ruins. Although politically divided between the Greek-speaking south and Turkish-speaking north since 1974, the island continues to attract visitors with its pristine coastline and cultural heritage.
The EEA noted that coastal sites generally scored higher than inland bathing waters. Central European lakes and rivers are more prone to short-term pollution from heavy rainfall, drought, or low water flow.
Despite improvements, 332 sites (1.5%) across Europe were rated poor in 2025, compared to 1.9% in 2009. Countries like Estonia, Sweden, the Netherlands, and France reported poor water quality in 3% or more of tested locations.
In a statement, EU Environment Commissioner Jessika Roswall said, “Clean water is essential for recreation and well-being, especially as summer approaches.”
