Delta Adds More Fees and Restrictions to Basic Economy Fares

Flying on a Basic Economy ticket with Delta Air Lines is becoming even more frustrating for budget-conscious travelers. Delta has introduced a series of changes that make its least flexible fare class even more restrictive and expensive to modify or cancel.
Delta’s updated Basic Economy policies now impose higher cancellation fees and eliminate the option to make any changes on many tickets. For flights originating in Europe, including certain North African destinations, cancellation fees have increased from €200 to €300. Even more concerning, Basic Economy tickets issued between March 21, 2024, and June 26, 2025, cannot be changed or canceled at all—effectively locking passengers into non-refundable, non-changeable bookings for over a year.
In Central America, cancellation fees now vary based on the destination. Travelers flying to the United States, Canada, or the Caribbean will pay $99 to cancel a Basic Economy ticket. Those traveling to Mexico, South America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, or the Pacific region will face a $199 fee. In all cases, no changes are permitted—only cancellations.
The steepest increase applies to flights to South America. Starting June 26, 2025, the Basic Economy cancellation fee will jump from $199 to $330, a 66% hike. Change requests remain completely prohibited.
Delta is also preparing to rebrand Basic Economy as “Delta Main Basic” in late 2025. However, the rebranding will not remove these new restrictions or fees.

Bottom Line for Travelers
These changes affect Delta Basic Economy bookings worldwide, not just in the US. Rules and fees vary dramatically by region, so it’s essential to check your ticket’s origin—for example, UK tickets face a £200 fee, European tickets may be locked in entirely, and South America has the steepest $330 rate.
Always review your fare rules before booking—or consider upgrading to Main Cabin if you may need flexibility. Travelers are urged to carefully consider their plans before booking Basic Economy, as the fare’s low upfront cost could lead to significant penalties later on.
