Delta Air Lines Revamps Boarding Groups for Enhanced Clarity and Efficiency
Delta Air Lines is set to overhaul its boarding process to make it simpler and more intuitive for passengers. Beginning May 1, Delta will introduce a new number-based system for its boarding zones, though the sequence in which passengers board will remain unchanged. This update, confirmed by Delta to Travel + Leisure, aims to provide passengers with clearer guidance on the boarding sequence and ensure a smoother experience.
Under the new system, boarding passes—both printed and digital versions accessed through the Fly Delta app—will display updated zone numbers. These changes will also be reflected on airport screens and in gate announcements to streamline the boarding process.
Here’s the new order in which Delta will welcome passengers aboard:
- Zone 1: Delta One, First Class
- Zone 2: Diamond Medallion members, Delta Premium Select passengers
- Early Access: Travelers with car seats, strollers
- Zone 3: Delta Comfort+ passengers
- Zone 4: Sky Priority customers
- Zone 5: Main Cabin 1 passengers
- Zone 6: Main Cabin 2 passengers
- Zone 7: Main Cabin 3 passengers
- Zone 8: Basic Economy passengers
Delta explains that the revamped numbering system will align more closely with its international partners, facilitating a more straightforward and self-explanatory boarding experience. Additionally, the airline will maintain its pre-boarding accommodations for passengers requiring additional time or assistance, as well as for active-duty military members and Delta 360 members.
At the airport, passengers in zones one through four will utilize the Sky Priority lane, while those in zones five through eight will use the general boarding lane. Signs at the boarding lanes will be updated to reflect the new zone numbers.
This change by Delta reflects a broader trend among airlines adjusting their boarding procedures for efficiency and customer satisfaction. Notably, United Airlines recently modified its own boarding process to expedite boarding by allowing window and middle seat passengers to board earlier.
