Delta Air Lines Revises Upgrade Priority for Frequent Flyers in 2024

Delta Air Lines, America’s second-largest airline, has revealed that from January 1, 2024, there will be a shift in its upgrade priority for its frequent flyer members. This announcement follows recent contentious modifications to its SkyMiles loyalty program, which now mandates members to reach a spending threshold to qualify for elite status.

Based on the airline’s disclosure, the revised upgrade priority will be determined by several factors, listed in their order of significance:

  • Medallion elite status level
  • Fare class
  • Membership of Delta SkyMiles Reserve American Express Card
  • Timing of the upgrade request

For reference, the existing upgrade priority, effective until December 31, 2023, is organized as follows:

  • Medallion elite status level
  • Timing of the upgrade request
  • Fare class
  • Membership of Delta SkyMiles Reserve American Express Card

With this new configuration, members who secure higher fare categories or possess the Delta SkyMiles Reserve American Express Card will find themselves in a more favorable position for upgrades. In contrast, those who opt for more economical fare classes or lack the said card may find upgrades more elusive. Nevertheless, the Medallion elite status will remain the predominant factor in upgrade considerations.

Delta rationalized this reshuffling as an endeavor to acknowledge and reward its top-tier patrons and also to reflect common industry practices. However, this revision has not resonated well with certain members. They argue that the impending changes might diminish their upgrade prospects, potentially undermining the appeal of the loyalty program.
