Delta Air Lines Simplifies SkyMiles Program and Offers More Ways to Earn Points
Delta Air Lines has announced a significant overhaul of its SkyMiles frequent flyer program, set to take effect on January 1, 2024, and applying to the 2025 status year. These changes aim to streamline the program, making it easier for customers to earn elite status and gain more options for earning points.
The primary change involves Delta’s use of a single metric, Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs), to determine eligibility for elite status levels. These levels come with valuable benefits such as complimentary upgrades, priority boarding, and waived fees. MQDs represent the amount of money spent on Delta flights, partner airlines, and select additional purchases, including car rentals, hotels, and Delta-booked vacations.
Currently, SkyMiles members are required to meet thresholds of Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs) based on distance flown or Medallion Qualification Segments (MQSs) based on the number of flights taken to qualify for elite status. These requirements will be eliminated starting in 2024, simplifying the process for members.
Delta’s goal is to simplify the program and reward customers who invest more in their relationship with the airline. Dwight James, Senior Vice President of Customer Engagement and Loyalty, highlighted Delta’s commitment to enhancing the SkyMiles Program by offering various options for customers to grow their membership from the moment they join the program.
Another significant change is the revision of access to Delta’s Sky Clubs, exclusive airport lounges that provide amenities such as food, beverages, Wi-Fi, and showers. Beginning in 2024, SkyMiles members flying on basic economy fares or equivalent fares on partner airlines will no longer have access to Sky Clubs, even if they pay a fee or hold a credit card granting access. Some credit cardholders may also face limitations on annual visits or spending requirements for unlimited access.
These changes are aimed at preserving the exclusivity and quality of the Sky Clubs, which have experienced increased crowding due to factors like the pandemic and a higher number of members retaining their status levels without flying.
Delta’s efforts to enhance customer loyalty, satisfaction, and profitability are driving these modifications to the SkyMiles program and Sky Club access.
