Delta Cargo joins wildlife protection initiative

Delta Cargo has joined United for Wildlife’s Transport Taskforce to help combat illegal wildlife trade.

The Transport Taskforce convenes airlines, ports, shipping companies, freight organisations and logistics firms to prevent illegal wildlife products from being successfully trafficked across borders.

As a member of the Transport Taskforce, Delta Cargo will implement 11 commitments to animal welfare and conservation, including adopting a zero-tolerance policy regarding illegal wildlife trade and increasing awareness of the nature, scale, and consequences of illegal wildlife trade.

“Delta Cargo believes that global airlines play a significant role in disrupting the supply chain of illegal wildlife trade and we are committed to doing our part. We are happy to announce that we have signed the Buckingham Palace Declaration and joined United for Wildlife’s Transport Taskforce,” said the airline.

On March 15 2016, the United for Wildlife Transport Taskforce member organisations signed up to recommendations developed collaboratively, with the first ever signing of a declaration at Buckingham Palace.

The Buckingham Palace Declaration is a commitment to take steps to shut down the routes exploited by traffickers of the illegal wildlife trade moving their products.

The declaration takes steps to remove the vulnerabilities in transportation and customs to tackle the criminals currently exploiting them. The declaration was signed by the taskforce members to represent their agreement to eleven commitments.

United for Wildlife is a global collaboration of organisations working to protect endangered species and combat illegal wildlife trading and trafficking through increasing awareness, strengthening cross-sector collaboration, and supporting on-the-ground conservation efforts.
