Delta Technical Glitch Triggers Delays Amid Nor’easter

Delta Air Lines is facing widespread flight delays after a technical glitch slowed its check-in and boarding systems, compounding travel disruptions as a powerful Nor’easter impacts the East Coast.

According to Delta, a connectivity issue affected tools used by gate agents and check-in kiosks during Sunday’s operations. The slowdown forced airport staff to process passengers manually — a significantly slower procedure compared with automated boarding systems.

In a statement, the airline said it had implemented several workarounds to reduce operational impact and emphasized that no cancellations were directly tied to the technical issue. Delta added that teams are working to resolve the problem as quickly as possible.

Despite the airline’s reassurances, real-time flight tracking data from FlightAware showed elevated delays across Delta’s network. Approximately 32% of mainline and regional flights were delayed at one point Sunday. Nearly 1,100 Delta mainline flights and an additional 236 flights operated by regional partner Endeavor were reported running late.

The technical issue was first highlighted publicly by aviation tracker @xjonnyc on social media platform X, drawing attention to unusually high delay percentages.

The disruption comes at a challenging time for East Coast travelers, as a major winter storm brings heavy snow, strong winds and hazardous travel conditions to several states. Airports along the I-95 corridor have already been grappling with weather-related operational slowdowns, and the added system issues have further strained schedules.

While Delta says cancellations have not resulted from the glitch itself, the combination of weather impacts and slower boarding processes has created extended wait times at multiple hubs.

Passengers are advised to check flight status updates before heading to the airport and allow extra time for travel as Delta works to stabilize operations amid both technical and weather-related challenges.
