Denver International Airport (DIA), the largest airport in the United States in terms of land area and one of the busiest in passenger traffic, has unveiled ambitious plans for a substantial expansion project scheduled for completion by 2045. Anticipating significant growth in passenger numbers, DIA aims to accommodate up to 120 million passengers annually, up from the 69 million it served in 2021.

To address the increasing demand, DIA will invest $2.1 billion in the expansion, primarily focusing on gate capacity. The project will see the addition of four new concourses and 100 new gates, increasing the airport’s gate capacity by 30%. These new concourses will be seamlessly connected to the existing Jeppesen Terminal, which will itself undergo expansion to include more check-in counters and security checkpoints.

Beyond gate expansion, the project will also enhance the overall passenger experience. Additional concessions, outdoor decks, pet relief areas, and various amenities for passengers and staff will be integrated into the airport’s infrastructure.

Phil Washington, the CEO of DIA, emphasized that this expansion is essential to prepare for the future and cater to the next generation of travelers. The project will be executed in phases, with the initial focus on the north end of the terminal. Washington anticipates rapid leasing of these new gates by airlines looking to expand their operations at DIA.

“DEN is already a world-class airport and a key economic driver for Colorado and the Rocky Mountain region,” said Washington. “This expansion project will ensure that we continue to provide an exceptional experience for our customers, partners, and employees, while also enhancing our role as a global gateway and a catalyst for growth and opportunity.”

DIA’s ambitious expansion project reflects its commitment to remaining a leading hub for air travel and economic development in the region.
