Denver Terminal Upgrade Accelerates for 2027 Completion
Denver International Airport (DEN) has unveiled the details of the third and final phase of its $2 billion terminal reconstruction project, now slated for completion in 2027—one year ahead of the previous 2028 target. The ambitious upgrade will transform the airport’s iconic Jeppesen Terminal, originally built in 1995 to accommodate 50 million passengers annually, into a state-of-the-art facility ready to handle the soaring demand.
In 2024, DEN surpassed expectations by serving more than 82 million passengers, and with forecasts predicting nearly 100 million annual travelers in the near future, the need for enhanced infrastructure has never been greater. The first two phases of the project, which cost a combined $770 million and included the creation of new ticketing/check-in areas and an additional security checkpoint, have already set the stage for the final phase—estimated at around $1.3 billion.
Unlike many modern terminal projects that focus on expanding retail and concession spaces, Denver International Airport’s reconstruction is primarily designed to improve operational efficiency and passenger flow. The final phase will complete the full build-out of the Jeppesen Terminal and address critical infrastructure needs essential for managing increased passenger volumes.
A standout feature of the final phase is the creation of the “Global Gateway,” an area dedicated to international passengers. This innovative concept will streamline the process for travelers arriving from overseas, providing a seamless connection experience. The Global Gateway will facilitate quick transfers through security, supported by the addition of eight new security lanes that aim to ease congestion and boost capacity.
In tandem with the Global Gateway, DEN will introduce a “Welcome Home Colorado” space tailored for domestic arrivals. This inviting area will feature ample seating, a large flight information board, and bright, spacious interiors designed to greet arriving passengers warmly as they reconnect with friends and family.
Adding to the passenger experience is the newly designed “Living Room” area—a vibrant, high-energy space equipped with a variety of comfortable seating options, tables, and multiple dining outlets. Notably, this zone will also include four dedicated security lanes specifically for passengers arriving via rail, enhancing multi-modal connectivity at the airport.
The final project phase will also encompass significant upgrades to airline check-in facilities, ensuring smoother operations and a more pleasant travel experience. As a major hub for United Airlines—which commanded a leading 47.3% market share at DEN in 2024—the improved terminal will further solidify Denver International Airport’s role as a critical nexus in the national and international air travel network. Southwest Airlines and Frontier Airlines, which handled 31% and 10.1% of passenger traffic respectively in 2024, will also benefit from the enhanced capacity and efficiency.
Overall, with DEN handling a record 82.4 million passengers in 2024—up 5.8% year-over-year—the accelerated completion of the terminal upgrade is a timely and strategic investment. The enhancements at Denver International Airport not only ensure that the Jeppesen Terminal is ready for future growth but also reaffirm DEN’s commitment to delivering a world-class travel experience while supporting the booming air travel market.
