DHL Express starts work on new Munich facility

DHL Express Germany has started construction of a new 11,000 sq m facility at Munich Airport as it looks to meet growing demand in the region.

The €104m facility will be almost seven times larger than the warehouse DHL Express currently rents at Munich Airport’s cargo center.

It will have airside access that will allow aircraft parked on the apron to be reached directly from the new building and will have two pick-up and delivery “fingers” that are able to handle 65 delivery vehicles at the same time.

DHL Express will build and operate the new site on land leased from the airport operator Flughafen München.

Markus Reckling, mnaging director DHL Express Germany, said: “Our old processing area can’t keep pace with the growth in import and export volumes given current digitalisation and globalisation trends.

“The new gateway facility at Munich Airport not only represents the next important step in our infrastructure plan but also enables us to prioritize our customers by offering them an improved service.”

DHL Express will use LED lighting technology and a photovoltaic system that generates 100 kWpeak to power the building’s services, servers and computers.

Heat pumps, supplemented by the airport’s district heating system, will provide heat to the building.

Plans also exist for 32 e-vehicle charging stations, two charging points for apron vehicles, and charging points at the employee parking lots.
