easyJet, in collaboration with Mankiewicz Aviation Coatings, has initiated a groundbreaking trial of a new lightweight paint, marking a significant advancement in the aviation industry’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions. Announced on January 3, 2025, this initiative is set to revolutionize the standard aircraft livery by utilizing a lower-weight paint that promises considerable fuel savings and reduced environmental impact.

Lahiru Ranasinghe, easyJet’s Director of Sustainability, emphasized the airline’s commitment to innovation, stating, “easyJet is constantly exploring and developing innovative solutions to lower the impact of our operations. While this forms a small part of a bigger strategy, formulating a new lightweight paint with our partners at Mankiewicz Aviation Coatings exemplifies how we’re assessing every single part of our operation to find efficiency gains to help us achieve this mission.”

The new paint technology not only uses less material but also significantly reduces the weight of the aircraft, with each plane being about 27 kilograms lighter. This reduction is expected to save up to 1,296 tons of fuel annually and decrease CO2 emissions by 4,095 tons once fully implemented across easyJet’s fleet by the end of 2029.

The trial is being conducted in collaboration with MAAS Aviation, a specialist in Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) based in Dublin, with the painting of the aircraft taking place at its facility in Maastricht. To date, 38 easyJet aircraft have been coated with the new paint, with plans to extend this to the entire fleet by 2030. The airline reports that these aircraft are “already delivering fuel savings thanks to their lighter weight.”

In addition to the new paint, easyJet has recently implemented Descent Profile Optimization (DPO) software across its fleet, contributing further to a record reduction in carbon intensity performance in FY24. This software enhances the way aircraft descend, making flights more fuel-efficient and reducing carbon emissions.

easyJet’s initiatives reflect its ongoing commitment to decarbonizing the aviation sector, demonstrating that even small innovations can contribute significantly to larger environmental goals. As the first airline to trial this eco-friendly paint, easyJet sets a precedent for others in the industry, underscoring the importance of innovation in achieving sustainability objectives.
