British low-cost EasyJet is gearing up for a significant expansion by eyeing the purchase of up to 257 aircraft from European aviation giant Airbus. This strategic move forms a crucial part of EasyJet’s growth strategy, charting a course well beyond 2028.

EasyJet’s Fleet as of August 2023:
A319-100: 95
A320-200: 171
A320neo: 52, orders: 188
A321neo: 15, orders: 235

CEO Johan Lundgren has confirmed that the proposed acquisition, pending shareholder approval, encompasses 157 aircraft, with an option to add 100 more A321neo narrowbody jetliners to their fleet. Currently operating around 330 aircraft, EasyJet is strategically looking to phase out older planes as it modernizes its fleet.

This prospective mega-order aligns with broader industry dynamics, as Airbus and its rival Boeing are striving to meet the surging demand for new aircraft in the post-pandemic travel resurgence. Both aerospace giants have grappled with supply-chain challenges, including shortages of critical components such as engines.
