EBACE Prioritizes Business Aviation Safety in EU Talks

At this year’s European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (EBACE) in Geneva, safety and regulatory collaboration are top priorities for the business aviation sector. Industry leaders and regulators are working closely to enhance safety standards and improve communication between national associations and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).

Maxime Wauters, senior manager for safety and regulatory affairs at the European Business Aviation Association (EBAA), emphasized that integrating EBACE with AirOps was designed to bring safety and operational discussions together. “Safety is not separate from daily operations,” he said.

Yngvi Rafn Yngvason, safety analyst at EASA, stressed the importance of safety promotion as outlined in ICAO Annex 19. “It’s about behavior. If you promote safety the right way, people adopt safer work practices,” he said. Yngvason, attending EBACE for the first time, said the event fosters vital connections between regulators and industry players.

Flexjet’s European safety and compliance director Colin Russell praised John Franklin, EASA’s head of safety promotion, for shifting the dialogue with industry toward engagement and shared responsibility. “If you care about the topic and people, it shows—and John’s passion has made a difference,” Russell said.

Tony Cramp, managing director of Shell Aviation, pointed out that smaller operators often lack resources to implement robust safety systems. By encouraging collaboration and knowledge sharing, he said, the entire industry benefits.

Cramp added that flight data monitoring programs must be better utilized to detect and learn from near-misses. “These are leading indicators that help shape best practices and prevent future incidents,” he concluded.
