Ebonyi Air Secures Licence, Plans Nigeria Launch

Nigeria’s Ebonyi State government has secured all required regulatory approvals to launch its proposed state-owned carrier, Ebonyi Air, marking a significant step toward expanding aviation connectivity in the region. The announcement was made by Ngozi Obichukwu, the state’s commissioner for aviation and transport technology, who confirmed that an aircraft has already been procured and operations are expected to begin once final documentation is completed.

Speaking at Ebonyi Chuba Okadigbo International Airport on February 3, Obichukwu stressed that the creation of Ebonyi Air is an economic development initiative rather than a political project. According to local media reports, she said the airline is being positioned to support both passenger and cargo operations, including domestic and international routes.

Although the specific aircraft type has not yet been disclosed, Obichukwu previously indicated that the airline plans to operate 60-seat aircraft owned outright, avoiding leasing arrangements. The newly acquired aircraft is not currently based in Ebonyi State due to the absence of dedicated hangar facilities at the airport.

Operations will commence once outstanding regulatory documentation is finalized. Obichukwu assured residents that the state government remains committed to delivering the project without delay, adding that preparations are well advanced.

The commissioner also confirmed that Ebonyi Chuba Okadigbo International Airport is fully licensed for flight operations. The airport is equipped with modern runway lighting systems that support safe night-time operations, enhancing its readiness for commercial services.

Plans for Ebonyi Air were first announced in July 2024, when the state government revealed its intention to procure four aircraft for the start-up carrier. The initiative aims to maximize the use of the newly developed airport infrastructure in Abakaliki, the state capital. As part of the broader aviation investment strategy, the airport’s 3.5-kilometre runway has been rehabilitated at a reported cost of NGN20 billion, equivalent to approximately USD14.65 million.

With licensing secured and aircraft acquisition underway, Ebonyi Air is positioning itself as a new entrant in Nigeria’s domestic aviation market, potentially boosting regional connectivity, trade, and economic growth in southeastern Nigeria.
