Edelweiss Welcomes First A350-900, Sets New Path

Swiss leisure carrier Edelweiss, part of the Lufthansa Group, has taken a significant step forward in modernizing its fleet with the delivery of its first Airbus A350-900 aircraft. Registered HB-IHF, the aircraft was recently retrieved by an Edelweiss crew from its storage at Tarbes-Lourdes-Pyrénées Airport (LDE), where it had been parked since 2020. On March 13, 2025, the jet completed its journey to Edelweiss’ main base at Zürich-Kloten Airport (ZRH), arriving at 15:11 local time. The carrier will begin regular service with this state-of-the-art aircraft on April 1, 2025.
Initially, Edelweiss plans to deploy the new A350-900 on familiarization flights across its short and medium-haul networks. This early phase is designed to acclimate the crew and fine-tune operational processes with the advanced aircraft. However, the true test of its capabilities will come in May 2025, when the aircraft is scheduled to operate its first commercial long-haul route—connecting Zürich with Las Vegas (LAS). This strategic route is expected to open up new leisure travel opportunities and further cement Edelweiss’ position in the competitive leisure market.
The introduction of the A350-900 is part of Edelweiss’ broader strategy to modernize its fleet and replace its aging Airbus A340-300s. The first A350-900, acquired from LATAM Airlines, is one of six such aircraft on order. For the initial deliveries, the airline has chosen to retain the cabin configuration used by LATAM. The current layout includes 339 seats divided into three classes: 30 in Business, 63 in Economy Max—Edelweiss’ premium economy product—and 246 in Economy. Although this configuration will serve as the baseline for the first four A350s, Edelweiss has already announced plans to refurbish the cabin interiors. The airline aims to customize the layout to reflect its own brand identity and enhance the travel experience with modern design and comfort features.
Edelweiss primarily operates within the charter and leisure market. Its decision to update its long-haul fleet using the versatile A350-900 aligns with the growing demand for premium leisure travel. By transitioning from its older A340-300 fleet, Edelweiss is set to improve operational efficiency, fuel economy, and passenger comfort on both its regional and long-haul flights.
Adding to the excitement, Edelweiss’ sister carrier, SWISS, will also take delivery of its first A350-900 later this year. SWISS has teased plans to debut the aircraft with a unique “SWISS Wanderlust” livery—a design inspired by Switzerland’s rich cultural heritage and stunning landscapes. Although the exact delivery date remains unconfirmed, this special livery is expected to attract attention and set a distinctive tone for the airline’s renewed fleet.
The delivery of the Airbus A350-900 marks a new chapter for Edelweiss as it strives to offer enhanced travel experiences and maintain its competitive edge in the leisure travel segment.
