Edinburgh Airport achieved a new milestone in 2024 by welcoming 15.8 million passengers, a 10 percent increase over the previous year and the highest total ever recorded at any Scottish airport. The surge in traffic reflects sustained demand for both leisure and business travel, with particularly strong growth in long-haul routes, which have expanded by 50 percent since 2019. During Routes Europe 2025 in Seville, airport executives highlighted the development of new services, strategic investments and the significance of being named both the 5–20 million passengers category winner and Overall Winner at the Routes Awards.

Recent transatlantic additions underscore Edinburgh’s rising appeal on the global stage. In May 2024, JetBlue launched daily seasonal flights to New York’s JFK Airport, and the carrier will further boost connectivity in May 2025 with new service to Boston Logan. American Airlines is also set to commence nonstop flights from Philadelphia to Edinburgh next spring, offering year-round access to the U.S. East Coast. These partnerships reflect the airport’s data-driven approach to route development, which combines market analysis with targeted business cases to secure new services that meet passenger demand.

Edinburgh’s winter schedule has also seen notable enhancements. Emirates reinstated daily flights to Dubai in November 2024, strengthening the airport’s links to the Middle East and providing seamless connections to passengers traveling onward to Asia, Africa and beyond. “The Middle East and Asia are key markets for sustained growth,” said Jonny Macneal, head of aviation at Edinburgh Airport, noting significant indirect traffic flows to Saudi Arabia, India and China. By leveraging capacity from hub carriers, Edinburgh positions itself as a convenient gateway for passengers seeking efficient one-stop itineraries to emerging destinations.

Underpinning these route successes is a commitment to strategic investment in both infrastructure and people. The airport has expanded its terminal facilities, enhanced digital wayfinding and introduced automated baggage solutions to streamline passenger flow during peak summer and busy festival periods. Staff training programs ensure that the customer experience remains a priority, while cross-team collaboration supports swift execution of new route launches. “It’s recognition of their work, the relationships they’ve built with the airlines, the business cases they produce and the whole effort not just from our team but our colleagues back in Edinburgh,” Macneal said of the airport’s Routes Awards triumph.
