Edmonton Airport Wins Top Award for Passenger Growth
Edmonton International Airport (YEG) has been recognized for its exceptional growth and strategic air service expansion, winning the 5-10 Million Passengers category at the prestigious Routes Awards. Speaking at Routes World 2024 in Bahrain, YEG highlighted its unique approach to air service development, which has significantly contributed to its success and recognition in the aviation industry.
In 2023, Edmonton International Airport served over 7.5 million passengers, achieving 92% of its pre-pandemic passenger volume. This impressive milestone underscores YEG’s commitment to growth through strategic collaborations with airlines and stakeholders. The airport offers nonstop connections to more than 50 destinations, catering to both domestic and international travelers.
A key driver of YEG’s expansion has been its partnership with WestJet, the airport’s largest carrier. WestJet’s 2024/25 winter schedule includes a 20% capacity increase compared to the same period in 2023, expanding service to 30 nonstop destinations. Notably, WestJet has introduced new routes to Ottawa and Montreal, enhancing YEG’s connectivity within Canada. Additionally, WestJet launched a daily year-round service to Atlanta earlier this year, significantly improving YEG’s transborder connectivity.
Porter Airlines has also contributed to YEG’s domestic growth by introducing daily flights to Montreal. These new routes have bolstered the airport’s offerings, providing travelers with more options and improving overall passenger experience.
Adrian Warchola, Director of Air Service Development at YEG, emphasized the airport’s focus on expanding community access to more destinations. “We’re excited about the discussions we’ve had at Routes World,” Warchola said. “It’s been great to connect with old colleagues, new friends, and all the airlines we have relationships with.” This vision is realized through collaborations with existing airline partners and engaging with new carriers to increase capacity and open doors to global opportunities.
YEG’s success at the Routes Awards is attributed to its innovative approach to securing economic growth for the Edmonton community. The airport collaborates with 15 local communities through the Regional Air Services Opportunities Fund, which supports air service growth and finances new routes. Beyond financial assistance, YEG provides airlines with marketing support, data insights, and other resources to ensure the success of new services.
“It was an honor to be nominated alongside our peer airports, and then to win the category was humbling not only for us as a team but also for us as a community in Edmonton,” Warchola stated. “To have that recognition on a global stage was exciting.”
Looking forward, Edmonton International Airport aims to further expand its North American network while exploring opportunities for transatlantic and transpacific growth. The airport’s strategy is centered on meeting the diverse needs of its community and connecting Edmonton to global markets. By continuing to collaborate with airlines and invest in infrastructure, YEG is well-positioned to sustain its growth trajectory and maintain its status as a leading airport in Canada.
YEG’s award-winning strategy not only enhances travel options for passengers but also drives economic benefits for the region. The airport’s dedication to fostering strong airline partnerships and supporting community initiatives highlights its role as a pivotal hub in the global aviation network.
