Embraer’s E190F E-Freighter Receives EASA Certification, Ready for Global Cargo Operations

Embraer’s E190F, the Brazilian manufacturer’s latest addition to the air cargo market, has successfully received European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) certification, following its earlier approvals from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Civil Aviation Agency of Brazil (ANAC). This achievement marks a significant step forward for the E190F, paving the way for the aircraft to begin global operations as a dedicated short-to-medium haul cargo carrier.
The E190F program, launched in May 2022, aims to fill a gap in the air cargo market by providing a more efficient alternative to older, less capable models. Designed as a passenger-to-freighter conversion, the E190F utilizes the popular E190 regional jet platform, transforming it into a dedicated cargo aircraft. The conversion targets replacing smaller, slower turboprop aircraft with a more fuel-efficient, versatile solution capable of meeting modern logistical demands.
Embraer’s new E190F offers a range of advantages over traditional cargo planes, including a 40% increase in volume capacity, three times the range of large cargo turboprops, and up to 30% lower operating costs compared to larger narrowbody freighters. When combining the capacity of the main deck and the cargo hold beneath the floor, the E190F can carry a maximum payload of 13,500 kg (29,700 lbs), making it a robust option for regional air freight.
Embraer envisions that the progressive replacement of older E190 aircraft with the newer, more fuel-efficient E2 version will provide a steady supply of airframes available for conversion into freighters. With the growing demand for faster, decentralized air cargo solutions, particularly driven by the booming e-commerce sector, the E190F is well-positioned to meet these needs.

The E190F first flew in April 2024 and was showcased to the public at the Farnborough Airshow in July 2024. Embraer highlights that the E-Freighter is tailored to meet the specific needs of e-commerce and modern trade, which demand quick deliveries and more localized operations. The aircraft’s design enables it to expand coverage for time-sensitive deliveries to a wider array of destinations, offering much lower emissions and reduced operational costs compared to larger aircraft in similar operations.
With EASA certification now in hand, alongside the approvals from the FAA and ANAC, Embraer is optimistic about the E190F’s potential to replace older turboprop freighters operating on regional routes. As airlines look for more efficient solutions to meet the rising demands of global air freight, the E190F is set to become an attractive proposition for carriers looking to modernize their fleets.
With these certifications and a growing demand for agile, fuel-efficient cargo solutions, Embraer is poised to capitalize on the market for crossover jets and secure more orders for its E-Freighter.
