Emirates CEO Urges Airbus to Revive Fuel-Efficient A380
Emirates CEO Tim Clark has called on Airbus to develop an upgraded version of the Airbus A380, citing the demand for high-capacity aircraft. Clark believes that with lighter materials and more fuel-efficient engines, a revamped A380 could be a game-changer for the aviation industry.
“If we were to put $20 billion on the table for Airbus, they’d probably build it for us,” Clark stated in an interview with Business Insider. His comments reflect Emirates’ ongoing reliance on the A380, which remains a key part of its long-haul operations.
The double-decker A380 was discontinued by Airbus in 2021 due to low demand from airlines. However, rising passenger numbers and airport congestion have renewed interest in large aircraft. Emirates, the world’s largest A380 operator, continues to advocate for a new version that aligns with modern fuel efficiency standards.
Clark emphasized that advances in aerospace technology, including composite materials and next-generation engines, could improve the aircraft’s economic viability. While Airbus has not publicly expressed plans to restart A380 production, the airline’s strong backing may influence future developments.
A redesigned A380 could address industry needs as air travel demand surges post-pandemic. With sustainability and operational efficiency being top priorities, Airbus may eventually reconsider a next-generation superjumbo.
