Emirates Expands Vietnam Presence with New Partnerships and Route Growth
Emirates has signed two significant memoranda of understanding (MOUs) with Vietnam Airlines and VietJet, aiming to strengthen its footprint in Vietnam and broaden travel options between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Southeast Asian nation. These partnerships reflect Emirates’ strategic focus on expanding its presence in emerging markets to cater to the rising demand for tourism and business travel.
The MOU with Vietnam Airlines builds on a three-decade partnership that started in 1994, initially with an interline agreement, and now extends into new collaborative areas. The updated partnership seeks to include loyalty program benefits, cargo operations, and technical services, allowing both carriers to capitalize on growing demand for flights between the UAE and Vietnam. Emirates Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer Adnan Kazim commented on the partnership, emphasizing that Vietnam “presents tremendous opportunities” for tourism expansion. “We look forward to growing our footprint in Vietnam and widening the scope of our partnerships in the future,” Kazim noted.
In its agreement with VietJet, Emirates aims to explore joint initiatives to stimulate travel flows between the UAE and Vietnam. VietJet’s hubs in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang provide ideal gateways to popular domestic and regional destinations. This partnership is expected to increase connectivity options for travelers and improve access to Vietnam’s key tourist and business locations, strengthening Emirates’ role in Vietnam’s air travel market.
The timing of these agreements aligns with broader UAE and Vietnamese governmental efforts to enhance tourism and trade ties. In a significant boost to bilateral relations, the UAE and Vietnam recently signed a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), Vietnam’s first free-trade agreement with a Middle Eastern nation. This new agreement is expected to facilitate cross-border trade and attract investments, further strengthening economic cooperation. In the first half of 2024 alone, trade between the UAE and Vietnam rose by 43% year-over-year, totaling $3.2 billion.
Emirates currently operates the only nonstop passenger flights connecting the UAE and Vietnam, providing daily services from Dubai International Airport to both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City with Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. This existing service supports approximately 11,500 seats each week in both directions, catering to both business and leisure travelers. In response to the rising demand, Emirates plans to introduce a second daily flight to Ho Chi Minh City starting January 15, 2025. This additional frequency is strategically timed to support peak travel during Vietnam’s Lunar New Year, ensuring ample capacity for the increased demand typical of this holiday season.
The Emirates-Vietnam Airlines partnership also envisions enhanced cargo collaboration, a crucial element for supporting the UAE and Vietnam’s growing trade volumes. With Vietnam’s expanding manufacturing sector, these partnerships can play a significant role in meeting the increased demand for cargo transport to and from the region. Additionally, the reciprocal loyalty benefits expected from the Emirates-Vietnam Airlines MOU will offer frequent flyers an enhanced travel experience, making it easier for customers to earn and redeem rewards across both airlines’ networks.
By collaborating with VietJet, Emirates can leverage VietJet’s extensive domestic and regional network, allowing travelers arriving from the UAE to connect seamlessly to a variety of destinations within Vietnam and throughout Southeast Asia. This partnership will cater to travelers who want to explore Vietnam’s cultural and scenic attractions beyond the main hubs of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
Emirates’ expanded operations and partnerships align with the UAE’s commitment to strengthening tourism ties in Asia, catering to the anticipated rise in inbound and outbound travelers. By focusing on mutually beneficial partnerships with Vietnam Airlines and VietJet, Emirates is well-positioned to drive tourism and improve business connectivity between the two nations.
In the longer term, these partnerships allow Emirates to strengthen its competitive position in the growing Vietnam market. As Vietnam continues to attract tourists and international investments, Emirates’ expanded network and partnerships are expected to boost its brand presence and service offerings across Southeast Asia. Both MOUs represent a calculated strategy by Emirates to diversify its network in Asia and enhance its connectivity through strategic partnerships.
With these new developments, Emirates is setting the stage to support Vietnam’s growing travel demand, reinforcing its status as a key connector in the global aviation landscape.
