Emirates Invests Over $2.4 Million in Advanced Onboard Medical Equipment

Emirates has announced a significant investment of more than $2.4 million to enhance its onboard medical capabilities, ensuring faster and more efficient medical care for passengers during flights. The Dubai-based airline has partnered with French medical equipment manufacturer Parsys Telemedicine to develop next-generation medical equipment that will be deployed across its fleet of more than 300 aircraft in the coming years.

The newly designed ‘telemedicine station’ features advanced technology, including high-definition video conferencing, remote passenger assessment, secure data transmission, and a 12-Leads Telecardia ECG, which allows Emirates cabin crew to provide life-saving support during in-flight medical emergencies. This innovative equipment is integrated into a portable station, enabling the crew to collect vital signs and medical information, which is then transmitted to Emirates’ Ground Medical Support team in Dubai.

Emirates’ Ground Medical Support team is available 24/7 and is composed of medical professionals who provide guidance and support to the airline’s crew during medical situations. The telemedicine kit includes devices such as a pulse oximeter, thermometer, blood pressure monitor, glucometer, and electrocardiogram (ECG). The Medcapture device, a key component of the kit, allows the crew to wirelessly transmit passengers’ vital signs directly to the ground team via Bluetooth, eliminating the need for manual note-taking.

The Medcapture device, a tablet customized to align with Emirates’ medical procedures, features an intuitive interface designed to help cabin crew operate it efficiently, even in stressful and challenging situations. This technology enables real-time communication between the crew and ground-based doctors, allowing for quick assessments and, in some cases, visual evaluations of passengers’ medical conditions through video conferencing.

Emirates has already installed the equipment on a number of its aircraft, and it has proven invaluable in managing medical cases onboard. For instance, on a recent flight to Lyon Saint Exupery Airport (LYS) in France, an elderly passenger suffered a medical emergency related to her cardiovascular system, causing a sharp decline in oxygen levels and other vital signs. The trained cabin crew swiftly administered oxygen and used the Parsys Medcapture device to send the passenger’s vital signs to the Ground Medical Support team. This allowed for immediate remote assistance, helping the crew effectively manage the situation and provide the passenger with optimal care during the flight.

This investment in advanced medical technology underscores Emirates’ commitment to passenger safety and well-being, enhancing its ability to handle medical emergencies efficiently while in the air. As the airline continues to equip its fleet with cutting-edge telemedicine tools, it aims to provide passengers with the highest level of care, wherever they may be flying.
