Emirates to Place New Aircraft Order at Dubai Air Show 2025
Emirates Airlines is preparing to place a new aircraft order at the Dubai Air Show in November 2025, as the carrier seeks to expand its fleet despite ongoing delivery challenges. Tim Clark, president of Emirates, revealed in an interview with Bloomberg that while the airline is looking to place new orders, the aircraft would likely not be delivered until the mid-2030s due to current production schedules and long wait times.
Emirates has expressed interest in both Airbus A350s and Boeing 777Xs, with Clark emphasizing the airline’s continued commitment to the 777X program. Additional orders for the 777X will follow in the future, he noted. However, the airline is also considering the A350-1000, although Clark highlighted concerns regarding the durability of the Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines, which have yet to be fully proven in long-term service.
Currently, Emirates has 310 jets on order, including 62 A350-900s, 13 777-200 freighters, 35 777-8s, 15 787-8s, 15 787-10s, and a significant 170 777-9s. These orders are part of the airline’s strategy to maintain its competitive edge in the global aviation market.
However, delivery delays and the lack of available delivery slots for new aircraft have prompted Emirates to expand its cabin retrofit program. Originally set at a USD4 billion investment, the program’s costs have now risen to USD5 billion. By refurbishing the interiors of some of its in-service 777s and A380s, Emirates aims to address the delays in the delivery of new jets while ensuring its fleet remains up to date. In May 2024, the airline announced an expansion of its retrofit plan to include 191 aircraft, up from the initial 120. This includes 110 A380s and 81 777s, ensuring Emirates remains competitive while awaiting its new deliveries.
Emirates’ decision to move forward with significant retrofits reflects the airline’s focus on maintaining high service standards despite supply chain disruptions and delays. With a robust order book and ambitious expansion plans, the airline is positioning itself for continued growth in the long term.
