A recent emergency situation aboard an Endeavor Air flight, operating as a Delta Air Lines regional partner, was brought to public attention via a YouTube video showcasing the communication between the flight’s pilot and air traffic control. The incident occurred shortly after the Bombardier CRJ-900LR aircraft, flying from Toronto Pearson International Airport to John F. Kennedy International Airport, issued a mayday call due to a fire in the cockpit.

The video, shared by the ‘You can see ATC’ YouTube channel, captured the critical moments as the flight, designated EDV4826, ascended to approximately 11,000 feet on February 3, 2024. The pilot reported an electrical fire in the cockpit, urgently requesting to return to Toronto. “MAYDAY- MAYDAY-MAYDAY, this is Endeavor 4826, declaring an emergency; just had a fire. An electrical fire up in the cockpit. Looks like it’s out currently. Requesting return back to Toronto immediately,” the pilot communicated.

Following the distress call, air traffic controllers granted the aircraft permission for an emergency descent and landing. The pilot confirmed the presence of 74 passengers and crew onboard and approximately 9,000 pounds of fuel remaining. Fortunately, the fire, which appeared to originate from the captain’s windshield heater, was quickly extinguished.

The aircraft, bearing registration N320PQ, safely returned to Toronto Pearson International Airport, where it was met by emergency services. After an inspection by firefighters, the plane taxied to the gate, allowing passengers to disembark without reported injuries. The incident led to the replacement of the aircraft’s windshield and heating unit, with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada being notified.

Endeavor Air, in a statement to Newsweek, praised the professionalism of the flight crew in handling the situation and apologized to passengers for the inconvenience caused. The airline emphasized its commitment to safety and the prompt actions taken to resolve the incident, underscoring the training and preparedness of its staff in emergency situations.
