The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced the temporary closure of Enugu Airport from April 22 to May 6, 2025, to conduct emergency repairs on a damaged section of the runway. The closure affects both domestic and international flights, with all operations diverted to nearby airports.

According to FAAN, the runway suffered a significant rupture in the asphalt surface at a critical section, necessitating urgent repairs to ensure safety. Airlines impacted by the closure include Ethiopian Airlines, Air Peace, Ibom Air, and United Nigeria Airlines. Air Peace, which holds nearly 55% of Enugu’s market share based on weekly seats, is the most affected carrier, followed by Ibom Air with 26%, Ethiopian Airlines with 12%, and United Nigeria Airlines with 7%.

Air Peace confirmed it has suspended Enugu operations and will reroute flights to Asaba, Owerri, and Anambra airports without additional charges to passengers. The airline also warned travelers about scams exploiting the situation. Ethiopian Airlines announced its Enugu flights are suspended until May 6, while Ibom Air plans to resume services on May 7. United Nigeria Airlines, headquartered at Enugu, has shifted its flights to Anambra for the duration of the repairs.

Enugu Airport serves as a regional hub for southeastern Nigeria, connecting cities such as Abakaliki, Awka, Onitsha, and Owerri. Proposals to concession the airport, along with four others, are under review to enhance infrastructure, but no timeline has been finalized.
