Ethiopian Airlines Eyes Order for 20 Regional Jets

Ethiopian Airlines is exploring a potential double-digit order for regional aircraft, with at least 20 jets under consideration as the carrier looks to strengthen its short-haul and regional operations. Speaking at the 81st IATA Annual General Meeting in New Delhi, CEO Mesfin Tasew Bekele confirmed the airline is evaluating proposals from Embraer, Airbus, and Boeing, in what could become a highly competitive and strategic acquisition.

According to Bekele, the airline is currently assessing three aircraft types: the Embraer E2 series, the Airbus A220, and the Boeing 737 MAX 7, which is still pending certification. The final number of aircraft to be ordered will depend on the selected model, with each offering different capacities and performance capabilities suited for regional expansion across Africa and beyond.

Bekele also highlighted the operational challenges facing the airline, particularly ongoing delivery delays and engine maintenance issues. Ethiopian Airlines has recently had to ground several Boeing 787 Dreamliners and turboprops due to maintenance constraints. “We are receiving airplanes from both Boeing and Airbus, but deliveries have been delayed—some by three months, some six months, some more,” he said.

Despite the setbacks, the airline continues to expand its international footprint. On June 1, 2025, Ethiopian Airlines launched a new passenger service to Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, operating four weekly flights to the UAE’s third-largest emirate. The new route marks Sharjah as the carrier’s second destination in the UAE, reinforcing nearly five decades of connectivity between the Gulf and Africa.

Bekele emphasized the strategic importance of the new route in supporting economic, tourism, and diplomatic ties between the regions. Ethiopian Airlines’ current fleet includes Boeing 737s, 777s, 787s, Airbus A350-900s, A350-1000s, and De Havilland Q400 turboprops, reflecting its commitment to fleet diversity and global reach.

As the airline evaluates the next phase of its regional fleet strategy, the upcoming order could play a key role in improving domestic and continental connectivity, especially amid growing demand for efficient, right-sized aircraft capable of serving secondary markets and shorter-haul routes.
