Ethiopian Airlines is marking a historic milestone with the impending arrival of Africa’s first Airbus A350-1000, a significant development for both the airline and the continent’s aviation sector. On November 4, 2024, executives from Ethiopian Airlines and Airbus gathered at Toulouse Blagnac Airport (TLS) for a ceremony commemorating the official handover of the aircraft to the airline.

“This monumental occasion is a pivotal moment in the history of Ethiopian Airlines and the African aviation industry,” stated Mesfin Tasew, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, during the event.

Originally scheduled to depart France on November 5, 2024, at 05:01 local time, the delivery of the new A350-1000 was delayed by approximately one hour. The aircraft, registered ET-BAW, is now expected to land at Addis Ababa Bole Airport (ADD) at 14:20.

This A350-1000 is the first of four such aircraft currently on order from Airbus. In July 2022, Ethiopian Airlines announced its decision to upsize four previously ordered A350-900s to the larger A350-1000 variant, reflecting a commitment to enhance its fleet capabilities.

Tasew expressed enthusiasm for this upgrade, emphasizing that the investment in the A350-1000 will enable Ethiopian Airlines to “stay ahead of the curve in technology.” He noted that the aircraft is ideally suited for the airline’s dense routes and will play a crucial role in meeting the growing demand from customers across its extensive global network spanning five continents.

Currently, Ethiopian Airlines operates 20 A350-900s and is awaiting the delivery of an additional 11, underscoring its dedication to expanding and modernizing its fleet to better serve its passengers. The introduction of the A350-1000 marks a significant step forward for Ethiopian Airlines as it continues to enhance its position as a leading carrier in Africa and beyond.
