Ethiopian to Receive First A350-1000, Sets Key Routes

Ethiopian Airlines is preparing to welcome its first Airbus A350-1000 in November, marking it as the first African carrier to operate this model. With a seating capacity of 395, the A350-1000 will debut on four routes: Addis Ababa to Accra, Lagos, London Heathrow, and Washington Dulles, with the latter route including a Rome Fiumicino stop on the westbound journey. Full deployment on these routes is anticipated from March 25, 2025, coinciding with the start of the summer season.

While London Heathrow is tentatively set as the inaugural route, Ethiopian Airlines has yet to confirm the specific entry-into-service date for the A350-1000. This fleet expansion aligns with the carrier’s strategic growth, including its recent order for additional aircraft placed in 2022.

In tandem with this fleet update, Ethiopian Airlines will resume service to Monrovia, Liberia, starting November 30, after a 14-year hiatus. The Addis Ababa to Monrovia route will operate three times weekly on Boeing 787-8s and will continue to Conakry, Guinea. This resumption will replace the current one-stop service via Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

Mesfin Tasew, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, emphasized that reintroducing flights to Monrovia supports Ethiopian’s commitment to fostering economic ties across West Africa. Earlier this month, Ethiopian also launched a daily service between Addis Ababa and Port Sudan, expanding its African network to 66 destinations.
