Etihad Airways Boeing 787 Rejects Takeoff After Tire Burst
An Etihad Airways Boeing 787 Dreamliner had to reject its takeoff at Melbourne Airport (MEL) on January 5, 2025, after two of its main landing gear tires burst. The aircraft, with registration A6-BLN, was preparing for its scheduled flight EY 461 from Melbourne to Abu Dhabi when the incident occurred.
While accelerating on runway 34, the aircraft rejected the takeoff procedure after suffering tire damage. A video posted on social media showed the aircraft standing still on the runway, with emergency response teams spraying water on the burst tires.
Etihad Airways confirmed the incident on its social media, stating that the pilots rejected the takeoff due to “operational reasons.” The airline clarified that after safely halting the aircraft, foam was applied to the tires, a standard procedure in such situations.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and all 289 passengers were safely bussed to the terminal. They were re-accommodated on alternate flights to continue their journeys.
On January 6, Melbourne Airport confirmed that the Boeing 787 had been safely towed away, inspections were completed, and the runway was reopened for normal operations.
