Etihad Airways Explores New Widebody Aircraft Orders
Etihad Airways (EY) is currently engaged in exploratory discussions with both Airbus and Boeing regarding a potential new order for large widebody aircraft, according to sources cited by Bloomberg. The Emirati flag carrier is evaluating its options between the Airbus A350 and Boeing 777X models. However, insiders indicate that these discussions may not lead to a final decision in the immediate future, and there’s even a possibility that Etihad might forgo placing a new order altogether, reported ch-aviation.com.
As a prominent player in the aviation industry, Etihad Airways has a well-established portfolio of widebody aircraft. The airline currently operates five Airbus A350-1000s and has fifteen additional units on firm order from Airbus, which reflects its commitment to enhancing its long-haul capabilities. Additionally, Etihad has placed an order for seven A350 freighters, demonstrating its interest in expanding its cargo operations.
On the Boeing side, Etihad has orders for eight Boeing 777-8s and seventeen Boeing 777-9s, bolstering its fleet of high-capacity aircraft. The airline’s existing Boeing 777 fleet includes five 777-200 freighters and nine 777-300ERs, showcasing its reliance on this aircraft type for both passenger and freight services.
Etihad’s widebody fleet is further diversified with ten Airbus A380-800s, of which only five are currently operational. The airline also operates thirty-three Boeing 787-9s, with an additional eight on order, and has ten Boeing 787-10s, with a significant order of twenty more on the books. This varied fleet composition underlines Etihad’s strategy to maintain a competitive edge in international air travel by leveraging a mix of aircraft types to meet market demands.
As Etihad Airways continues its discussions with Airbus and Boeing, the aviation community is keenly watching for developments that could shape the future of its widebody fleet and overall operational strategy.
