Etihad and China Eastern Launch Historic Joint Venture

Etihad Airways and China Eastern have signed a landmark joint venture agreement, marking the first strategic partnership between a Middle Eastern carrier and a Chinese airline. The agreement was finalised at the Arabian Travel Market on April 30, 2025, just two days after China Eastern inaugurated its new Shanghai Pudong to Abu Dhabi service on April 28. China Eastern began with four weekly flights on the Shanghai–Abu Dhabi route, scheduled to become a daily service from September 12, 2025, in response to growing demand for connections between China and the United Arab Emirates.

Under the terms of the joint venture, members of Etihad Guest and Eastern Miles loyalty programmes can now earn and redeem miles across both airlines’ extensive networks. This integration offers travellers seamless reward opportunities whether flying within the Middle East or across China’s domestic and international routes. Customers will benefit from enhanced codeshare options, coordinated schedules and joint marketing initiatives designed to simplify booking and improve overall experience for passengers transiting through Abu Dhabi or connecting in Shanghai.

Etihad and China Eastern have also committed to aligning their customer service enhancements, from streamlined baggage handling and unified check-in procedures to reciprocal lounge access for premium travellers. By leveraging each other’s strengths, they aim to provide more convenient connections from Europe, North America and Asia through Abu Dhabi and Shanghai. The joint venture will also explore collaborative cargo solutions, tapping into China Eastern’s domestic freight network and Etihad Cargo’s global reach to offer faster, more reliable shipping options.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Arik De, Etihad’s Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer, said, “The official launch of our joint venture with China Eastern is a major leap forward—not just for our two airlines, but for the future of both the UAE and China. By combining our networks and aligning our loyalty programmes, we’re not only expanding choice and connectivity for our guests, but also setting the foundation for a new era of cooperation, innovation and shared success across our markets.” De emphasised that the partnership underscores Etihad’s commitment to building strategic alliances that enhance global connectivity and drive sustainable growth.

For China Eastern, the new alliance represents an opportunity to tap into the Middle Eastern hospitality market and establish a stronger foothold in the Gulf region. The airline’s new Abu Dhabi flights operate on modern Airbus A350 and Boeing 777 aircraft, offering business and economy class cabins tailored to business travellers and leisure tourists alike. With daily frequencies slated for launch in September, China Eastern expects passenger volumes to rise steadily, driven by increased tourism, trade and cultural exchanges between China and the UAE.

Etihad’s network expansion plan for 2025 includes the relaunch of several European and Asian routes, further supported by the new China Eastern partnership. The carrier’s hub at Abu Dhabi International Airport is set to benefit from increased transfer traffic, as passengers connecting from Shanghai can reach destinations across Africa, Australia and the Americas on Etihad’s widebody fleet. Reciprocal marketing campaigns will target key feeder markets in Southeast Asia, India and Europe, promoting seamless two-stop itineraries with combined ticketing and coordinated baggage transfers.

As the aviation industry continues to recover and evolve following the pandemic, such joint ventures are seen as critical drivers of resilience and competitiveness. By sharing revenues, costs and operational expertise, Etihad and China Eastern aim to reduce duplication, optimise fleet utilisation and deliver more value to customers. The partners will conduct regular performance reviews and joint planning sessions to ensure that their combined schedules and product offerings meet evolving market needs.

Looking ahead, both airlines plan to explore deeper collaborations in areas such as digital innovation, environmental sustainability and pilot training programmes. Initiatives could include joint investments in sustainable aviation fuel projects and the development of advanced data-driven customer engagement platforms. The Etihad–China Eastern joint venture sets a new standard for cross-region airline partnerships and highlights the enduring importance of strategic alliances in today’s global aviation landscape.
